Sadler’s Wells.
Up first - Sadler’s Wells. Sadler’s Wells has been the home of the arts in London for over three centuries, and it is one of our neighbours less than a 5 minute walk from us. See directions from us here.
History of Sadler’s Wells.
The story of Sadler’s Wells started with a mineral spring in the grounds of Richard Sadler’s music house. People visited the well for the special ‘healing properties’, but then stayed on to enjoy the entertainment. Time went by, the well eventually dried up, but the performances didn’t. In 1925 Lilian Baylis took over and dance led the performances. She believed ‘great art should belong to everyone’ which is still encompassed by Sadler’s Wells today. The Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet and English National Opera all started at Sadler’s Wells, it has played a key role in the history of theatre.
Why you should visit?
Sadler’s Well’s offers an amazing all year round program, celebrating dance in all its forms. They continue to share more new work than any other dance organisation in the world, and present world class work. Their vision is “create, through dance, a depth of connection beyond borders, cultures and languages, so we see ourselves in each other.”
We love having Sadler’s Wells as one of our neighbours in Angel. Next time you visit us don’t head straight to the West End, instead just walk down the road for world class dance, and a performance you won’t forget!
