Almeida Theatre’s History

The Almeida Theatre has been on the scene since the 1980s, and is named after the street it lives on. The Almeida really began as a literary and scientific society, having it’s own library, lecture theatre and even laboratory.

“From the beginning, our building existed to investigate the world.”

Ethos Today

The Almeida today is all about launching the next generation of British artists. It’s a small room with an international reputation. They showcase brave new work that posses the big questions around theatre and of the world around us.

They’re about risk taking, to provoke, to inspire, intrigue and surprise. To weave in the present, dig up the past and re-imagine the future.

“Whether new work or reinvigorated classic, whether in our theatre, on the road or online, we make live art to excite, enliven and entertain.”
